The tests develop the work for novices by laying down the essential technical rhythmic skills and gradually building a comprehensive tap vocabulary. Tapper’s are given the opportunity to enter examinations in each of the tests, although they are not compulsory, it provides a sense of achievement at the new skills learnt.
It is important to wear loose clothing that you feel comfortable in and that allows you to move freely such as dance trousers or jogging pants with a t-shirt. Black Oxford tap shoes can be ordered from your Barton’s teacher to provide a completely different dancing experience.

National aims
The dancers have the opportunity to study traditional dances, costumes, music and customs. The syllabus is wide in range and choice. It is designed to suit all teaching situations, embracing the national curriculum, community dance, dance degrees and ethnic studies. This leads to its creative use both in the classroom and the theatre. Folk dance is important in the present dance scene and all aspects are covered within the national dance faculty at Barton Dance and Drama Academy.
Examinations in national
National character grades primary to grade 4 blend traditional folk dances with a choreographed solo and group arrangement based on a folk theme or custom. Candidates are entered into examinations in groups of four and dance in pairs, with two students dancing the male part and two the female part. Candidates will be required to study the traditions, culture and costumes of the countries in each examination and may need to produce a project with the information they have learned. The major examinations pre-intermediate, intermediate, advanced 1 and advanced 2 are intended as a progression from the grades and are a requirement for teaching qualifications.
Uniform
The regulation ISTD uniform detailed below is required for all exam candidates and should be worn for all exam coaching classes.
Junior grades
Female: Purple leotard, ballet tights, black circular skirt with purple ribbons along the bottom, black canvas character shoes with 1” heels, purple ribbon for hair.
Male: Black dance trousers, white t-shirt and black jazz shoes.
Senior grades
Female: Purple leotard, ballet tights, black circular skirt with purple ribbons along the bottom, black leather character shoes with 2.5” heels, purple ribbon for hair.
Male: Black dance trousers, white t-shirt and black jazz shoes.
