The regulation ISTD uniform detailed below is required for all
exam candidates and should be worn for all exam coaching classes.
Barton’s t-shirts may be worn over purple catsuits for class.
Primary, Grades 1 - 3 & Bronze Jazz
Female: Purple lycra catsuit with white leather jazz shoes
or bare feet and purple ribbon for hair.
Male: Black unitard with black leather jazz shoes or bare feet.
Grades 4 - 6 & Silver Jazz
Female: Purple lycra velvet high necked leotard with black tights or leggings,
black leather jazz shoes (split soled optional) or bare feet and purple ribbon for
Male: Black unitard and black leather jazz shoes or bare feet.
Intermediate - Advanced 2 & Gold Jazz
Female: Purple lycra velvet high necked leotard, black leggings or tights,
black leather split soled jazz shoes or bare feet, purple ribbon for hair.
Male: Black unitard and black leather split soled jazz shoes or bare feet.
Modern Aims Modern Theatre Dance defies a single permanent definition. This is largely
due to its ability to adapt, develop and evolve with the changing fashion in dance.
Through a carefully planned and well-tried examination syllabus, which combines modern
dance, jazz and other dance styles, young people are trained to become disciplined
and versatile dancers who have a professional attitude towards dance.
Examinations in Modern A series of eleven examinations has been created from the seven
children's Grades ranging from Primary to Grade 6, through to the four professional
qualifications: Intermediate Foundation, Intermediate, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2.
The children's work is based on natural movements: walking, running, jumping and
skipping. It is designed to encourage an imaginative and rapid response from beginners.
Boys' work has been developed to meet increasing demand for a modern dance training
Jazz Aims The Jazz Awards provide a basic grounding in modern jazz, and are ideal
for the late beginner or as a recreational course of movement. The jazz syllabus
has been designed to complement the Modern Theatre faculty, offering a freer dance
based examination. The jazz faculty is much more performance based, however the technique
and strength gained from Modern Theatre class will enhance the look of each routine.
The Bronze and Silver jazz amalgamations were revised in 2010 to incorporate the
trend towards street and hip hop dancing, and a new Gold Star examination is currently
Examinations in Jazz A series of three examinations has been created from Bronze to
Gold. The Bronze examination has been created with students who are studying Grades
3 & 4 Modern Theatre in mind, with the Silver aimed at Grades 5 & 6, and Gold for
Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate. The proposed Gold Star examination will
be suitable for those aspiring to dance professionally and are working towards their
Advanced 1 & 2 Modern Theatre examinations.
